King Ludwig II's most magnificent palace, set on the Herreninsel island in Lake Chiemsee – a UNESCO World Heritage site. A splendid hall of mirrors modelled on Versailles, sprawling palace gardens and themed guided tours. Reached by Chiemsee boat.

For our guests coming from further afield, this is the must-see – King Ludwig's palace impresses us every single time.

A charming little island, home to the Benedictine convent of Frauenwörth (founded in 782!), a Carolingian gatehouse, the ancient Tassilo lime tree and cosy inns. A footpath circles the whole island, which is famous for its Chiemsee whitefish and the island brewery.

Our favourite Chiemsee moment: strolling around the car-free island and sitting by the water.

The Chiemsee-Schifffahrt boats take you across to the islands of Herrenchiemsee and Fraueninsel. The nostalgic Chiemsee-Bahn (a historic steam tramway) links Prien station with the boat pier – a treat for the whole family.

Germany's oldest working salt mine – a journey deep into the Alps. An adventure for all the senses: explore the tunnels, ride the miners' train and discover the story of salt.

Our rainy-day ace: pull on miners' overalls, whizz down the wooden slides, glide across the salt lake – kids love it.

An impressive world of legendary Porsche cars, wonderfully detailed model railways and historic tin toys. A place where dreams come true – for car enthusiasts and children alike. Puppet theatre and cinema included.

Not just for car fans – the enormous model railway alone is worth the visit.

Europe's largest and best-preserved mammoth skeleton! Over 650 m² covering 250 million years of south-east Bavaria's geological history. Four floors: geology, fossils, Ice Age giants and the Stone Age. More than a million visitors since 1995.

Small but excellent – and surprisingly popular with our kids.

A museum on the region's history of salt and moorland, located between Rottau and Grassau. Exhibitions, guided tours, walks around the museum grounds and a cosy museum café. Also available as a digital 360° tour.

Hands-on exhibitions for everyone! Currently showing: "RÖMER – Faces of an Empire". Family programmes, workshops, Lego building and children's birthday parties. Changing special exhibitions all year round.

The exhibitions here are a highlight for us every year – we hardly ever miss one.

Dive into the world of water – a visitor centre with fascinating insights into how Adelholzener mineral water is produced. Regular guided tours, including evening tours.
